Whenever I feel like having roast pork, I would head down to this stall called Guan Chee which is in Blk 106 Hougang Ave 1 coffeeshop. The pork meat is juicy, its skin crispy and it leaves a wonderful mouth-watering experience on first bite. I have ordered this at least 20 times a year, and each time the roast pork tastes as good as when I first ate it and which causes me to return to Guan Chee again and again. The stall uses charcoal for roasting, which explains the extreme fragrance of the pork. But I believe their secret is more than charcoal. This is because I have come across roast pork so often from other stalls which is either “under roasted” (not crispy) or “over roasted” (meat too dry). But for Guan Chee’s roast pork, the juice is locked inside the meat. As for the gravy, it has a unique herbal taste and the slightly sour-and-spicy chilli is simply a perfect companion for the pork. I have never come across any roast pork rice that impresses my taste buds all round, except this one. No wonder people are ordering roast pigs by the pieces from Guan Chee on weekends.
